If you’ve never sold a record collection before, the idea of having a buyer come to your home can feel a little uncertain.
What do you need to have ready? How long does it take? What happens between “they arrive” and “the collection is sold”?
These are practical questions, and they deserve practical answers. Here’s a straightforward look at what an in-home vinyl buying visit typically looks like from start to finish.

Before the Visit: What to Have Ready
You don’t need to do a lot of preparation before a buyer arrives, but a few simple things can make the visit go more smoothly.
Have the collection accessible. Records tucked deep in a storage unit or behind other items can slow things down. If the collection is spread across multiple locations in the home, having it in one general area helps the buyer get a clear picture more quickly.
Know roughly what you have. You don’t need a formal inventory, but having a general sense of what’s in the collection, genres, approximate number of records, whether there are 45s or 78s alongside LPs, and how long they’ve been stored helps the conversation start from a useful place.
Be ready to ask questions. An in-home visit is a two-way conversation, not just an inspection. If you’re unclear on any part of the process, from how offers are determined to what happens after a sale is agreed upon, the visit is a good time to get those answers.
When the Buyer Arrives
The visit typically starts with a brief conversation. The buyer will want to understand the collection’s background a little before getting into the records themselves. How long has it been in storage? Was it built up over time by one person, or assembled from multiple sources? This context helps a buyer understand what they’re about to look at before they start.
From there, the review begins. At DJ Records™, we look at the collection as a whole rather than pulling out individual titles one at a time. This means working through the records in the order they’re stored, getting a sense of the range of artists, genres, formats, and overall condition as we go.
What the Buyer Is Actually Looking At
A few things tend to draw a buyer’s attention during the review:
Condition. Both the record itself and the cover factor in. Surface marks, warping, and sleeve wear all influence how a collection is evaluated, though a mix of conditions is common in most collections and doesn’t automatically disqualify anything.
Pressing details. Original pressings, especially from certain eras and labels, carry more collector interest than later reissues of the same album. A buyer familiar with the market will notice these differences without needing the seller to point them out.
Genre and demand. Some genres and artists consistently attract collector interest. Others are more market-dependent. A buyer evaluating a collection is mentally mapping what’s in front of them against current demand, not just the titles themselves.
How the collection was stored. Records stored in climate-controlled spaces tend to hold up better over time than those left in garages or attics. Storage history isn’t always make-or-break, but it does factor into the overall picture.
How Long Does It Take?
This varies quite a bit depending on the size of the collection. A few hundred records might be reviewed in an hour or two. A collection of several thousand can take considerably longer. DJ Records™ works through collections carefully rather than quickly, because a rushed review benefits no one.
If you have a sense of the collection’s size before the visit, the buyer may be able to give you a general estimate of how much time to set aside.
After the Review: The Offer
Once the collection has been reviewed, the buyer will put together an offer. At DJ Records™, we aim to explain the reasoning behind the number rather than just presenting it without context. Factors like genre demand, pressing details, condition, and overall completeness all play a role, and sellers are welcome to ask questions about any of those.
If the offer works for you, the sale is completed on the spot. Payment is made by check or card at the time of purchase, so there’s no waiting after the deal is done. If you’d like time to think it over, that’s completely fine too. There’s no pressure to decide before you’re comfortable.

One Thing Worth Knowing
DJ Records™ purchases complete collections rather than individual records or partial lots. So if you’re hoping to hold back a portion and sell the rest, that’s worth mentioning upfront before a visit is scheduled. It helps both sides make sure the arrangement makes sense before anyone’s time is spent.
